Where thousands of years ago the first olive trees were cultivated, thats what experts are arguing about. Certain is that on the island of Crete, in the Minoic kingdom, before ca. 3000 BC , olive oil was first produced commercially. It is also clear that only then was the value of olive oil recognized and appreciated. An incomparable triumph was eiguided. Olive oil, as the gold of the south, became one of the most valuable foods of this period. To this day, this unique oil plays a very important role for us, as food, in medicine, in all religions, in pharmacy and cosmetics.

In Greece there are about 60 different varieties of olive trees. Their fruits are used to produce edible olives and olive oil. Greece is one of the largest producers in the world, with a quality unreachabily on the first place. The cultivation of the olive trees, the production of the olive oil and the edible olives are mostly still done in a traditional way, in harmony with nature. Most of the production is consumed domestically. Greece has by far the highest per capita consumption of olive oil and olives in the world. Greek olive oil is largely exported to Italy and Spain to improve the quality of their olive oils.
